Brian Steininger

My research examines Sinitic literature and (as) scholarship in Japan, particularly the interactions between literary form and the mechanics of writing (material and procedural). I have written on vernacular recitation practices, tonal prosody, manuscript circulation, woodblock printing, and commentary traditions across the 10th through 14th centuries. I am co-organizer of the Colloquium on Literacies across East Asia, which promotes comparative work on the transnational history of Literary Chinese.
